Taumata is the shortened form of the longest place name in the world – a hill near Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke’s Bay.

At 85 characters we think it may also be the longest wine name in the world: in full and in Maori it is -Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu

Its name translates into English as “the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as ‘landeater’, played his flute to his loved one.

If you want to try and pronounce it:- “Tow-ma-ta-fa-ka-ta-ni-ha-na-kor-o-or-ta-ma-te-a-tu-ree-pu-kapi-ki-mong-a-ho-ro-nu-ku-po-ka-ee-fen-u-aki-ta-na-ta-hu”

Grape Varieties: Sauvignon Blanc

Alcohol/VOL: 12.5%

Vintage: 2018

Other: Screw cap, Vegetarian

Tasting Notes:

Expressive grassy/asparagus nose backed with tropical fruits and citrus with hints of pineapple in a fruity palate. Crisp acidity, plenty of gooseberry character with herbal notes on the finish.

A good balance between the varietals herbaceous notes and tropical fruit and citrus character.

A rich, vibrant style of Shiraz, lightly oaked with dark fruit richness and a smooth tannin structure. Delivering length and a subtle complexity, this Shiraz showcases the age and reputation of Byrnes Estate vines.

Selected bunches of fruit were picked in the evening, crushed and fermented in stainless steel. A small volume was put aside to ferment in French oak barrels, before being blended back to create the finished wine.

4.5 Stars – ‘Top in Category’ & ‘Best Value Buy’ Winestate Magazine 2019

Having originally grown grapes for other major wineries, Byrne Vineyards started producing its own wines from the estate vineyards in 2008. It has gone from strength to strength winning many accolades.

Woolpunda originates from a beautiful vineyard with breathtaking views once used for sheep farming – the word Punda means water.

Grape Varieties: Shiraz

Alcohol/VOL: 14.5%

Vintage: 2017/18

Other: Screw cap

Tasting Notes:

Deep crimson in colour, with ripe cassis and plum aromas, accompanied by spices and subtle oak. A full bodied palate intense with raspberry and mulberry fruits and with anise and mocha accents.

Perfectly suited with slow roasted (or even lightly curried) lamb dishes.
